Jeju - Dragon Rock

Our next stop after Seongsan Ilchulbong was a visit to the Dragon Head Rock (Yongdu-am), which is located by the western coast of Jeju island. As the name implies, Dragon Head Rock is a natural rock formation which resemble the shape of a dragon's head.

The Legend
There are two versions of this story. In version 1, a dragon as an emissary of the Dragon King, came to Mt Halla in search of the elixir of youth, while version 2 tells the story of a dragon that grabbed the Sacred Jade belonging to the Guardian of Mt Halla. In either version, the dragon met with the same fate of being struck by an arrow from the angry Guardian. The dragon fell into the sea, revealing its wailing head above the water before it was turned to stone.

It didn't take us very long to arrive at the site of the Dragon Head Rock from Seongsan Ilchulbong. A path has been created to make your way down the surrounding cliffs in order to get different views of the rock formation. Sturdy footwear with a good sole is highly recommended as the rocks were quite uneven and slippery. Older folks need to be extra careful. The part that I like about this eco-tour was that it's free. Hopefully, it stays this way in years to come.
If you fancy live seafood, this is the place to be. I was a little trigger happy with my camera and the lady in the picture wasn't too pleased having her picture taken. Thankfully, I didn't understand a word she said, but her hand gestures said it all. The seafood (mainly squids) is eaten raw dipped in some sauce.
This basalt formation called the DRAGON HEAD ROCK or THE DRAGON'S HEAD is said to have been a dragon that lived in the Dragon King's Palace beneath the sea and in its desire to reach heaven was turned into stone. The length of the submerged body is 30 metres whilst the "head" rises to about 10 metres above the water. This oddly shaped structure is the result of the solidification of flowing lava during a volcanic eruption.
