Jeju - Seongsan Ilchulbong

Our next stop after visiting Ilchul Land was lunch at a small restaurant near the foot of Seongsan Ilchulbong (Sunrise) Peak, located about 20 minutes drive from Ilchul Land. The Koreans were lobbying very hard for this site to be included as one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the world (voting ended on 11.11.11). Seongsan Ilchulbong is now provisionally recognized as one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World. The official results will be announced in early 2012.
Seongsan Ilchulbong is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (just like our hometown in Melaka). It is also known as the Sunrise Peak. You don't need mountain climbing skills to get to be peak, but you must be reasonably fit. There are proper steps and handrails to help with your ascent. Majority of the visitors to Seongsan were locals. Our guide Victor told us that there are 99 rock peaks that were formed around the perimeter of the crater, but who's counting. The sights around Seongsun were just amazing, the air was so fresh and I can sense my blood pressure and stress level dropping by a huge notch!

On the left is an 'on the ground' view of the Seongsun Ilchubung, taken at the foot of the crater hill. As you can see, majority of the visitors are Koreans from the mainland. From this vantage point, it surely looked daunting to get to the top. The weather didn't look promising either, but thankfully it didn't rain then.
Approximately 15 minutes boat ride from the Northeastern coast of Jeju is the Island of Udo (as seen from Seongsan Ilchulbong). Udo Island (aka "Buffalo Head") resembles a buffalo being immersed with its head appearing above sea level. From afar, Udo didn't look that appealing. Apparently, there are nice beaches in Udo, which is also a very popular chill-out spot amongst locals and tourists alike. We won't miss it the next time we visit Jeju!
Jeju is famous for its professional women divers. These amazing women can dive for as long as ten minutes underwater without the aid of any breathing apparatus. The picture on the left shows the site where some of these divers conduct demos on what they are capable of.
This is one of my favourite pictures of Seongsan Ilchulbong. It is no wonder why Seongsan is nominated as one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World. Believe me, Photoshop is not involved here!
